Recent wording on the USAf website has caused confusion regarding the status of the GED for admission to degree studies in South Africa. This notice provides clear clarification for students and parents.
1. Foreign Conditional Exemption (Post-2019 GED)
Students who obtained the GED in South Africa after 2019 are not eligible to apply directly to USAf for Foreign Conditional Exemption.
2. The GED Is Not Rejected
The above does not mean that the GED is not accepted for further study.
It does not mean that students cannot pursue degree qualifications.
Other legally recognised exemption pathways remain in place.
3. Private Institutions
Students with a GED continue to enrol in degree programmes at private higher education institutions in South Africa.
Where required, the institution applies to USAf for the relevant exemption on behalf of the student.
Applications are submitted by the admitting institution, not by the student directly.
Each institution sets its own admission criteria and determines whether it will support an exemption application.
4. Overseas and Online Universities
Many overseas universities and accredited online universities are welcoming of the GED.
The GED is a recognised American high school equivalency credential and is widely accepted internationally for admission purposes.
Students considering international or online study pathways should consult the relevant institution directly for admission requirements.
